Jawfish Southern Smiler ??
Scientific name: Opistognathus jacksoniensis
This 'Smiler' is one of a couple we have at Manta Arch dive site at South Solitary Island.
This particular photo was taken just at the bottom of the mooring, and took some time to get. the Smilers are very timid critters and disappear down their holes as soon as you come close! We are not 100% sure that this is a "Southern Smiler" either, as we have not seen them outside their holes much.
Last year I tried to get more shots of the Smilers and upon looking for them found their holes had gone! Thinking they had dissappeared for good, after a strong weather "blow", I was lucky to find them in another location! But I still haven't got a better shot than this!
They aparently grow up to 250mm in length, and have holes around 100mm in diameter
We are constantly updating, so watch these spaces!
